Moving kitchen cabinets

Looking for validation

Do you ever ask a question and you know the answer you want but you want someone else to validate your thoughts?  Well…  True confession…  In my last post, I totally wanted you all to say “Move those cabinets!”  (And I totally wanted you to say it in your best game show voice).  Thankfully, most of you agreed.  Convincing my husband that moving kitchen cabinets was the right thing to do was more challenging.  It was not quite nagging him but it was enough talking about it that the message was clear. This is what I want to do and like a good husband, he finally agreed.  I’m not sure he really thought I’d do it but he agreed nonetheless.

So… Monday morning, I started my day with a lot of coffee and began the task of emptying the cabinets.  It was horrifying.  My table was covered.  My counters were covered. I hadn’t realized how MUCH was stored in those cabinets.

Forging ahead

I began to waiver and lose my nerve, certain I had bitten off more than I could chew.  What got me through, you ask?  Good old determination.  I did NOT want to tell Andy I was wrong.  Admitting you’re wrong is so hard!

I rolled up my sleeves and started removing the wall cabinets.  I got one cabinet all unscrewed and was so excited for it to come down but it didn’t. It stayed on the wall—mocking me. Turns out 45 years together and a coat of paint made those cabinets bonded like Romeo & Juliet.  I needed muscle.  As luck would have it, my awesome cousin, Jon, happened to stop by.  Other than the horrifying state of my kitchen, it was perfect timing.  Was it perfect for him?  Well, let’s just say he didn’t complain.  Like I said, he’s awesome.  We worked to remove a few more screws and before you know it, those wall cabinets were down and with no room in the kitchen, we put them in the middle of my living room.  What?  You don’t have cabinets as coffee tables?

At any rate, it was time to swap a base cabinet and the fridge.  Easy peasy.  I finally got those wall cabinets apart and stacked one on top of a base cabinet so it felt similar to the utility cabinet I want to put there.  At that point, I knew moving kitchen cabinets was the right thing to do.  Andy came home from work and approved which was so satisfying!  We moved both base cabinets and the counter to see how it could really feel.

I think we are on to something here!

A little slice of heaven

This one little space makes me happy.  It’s indicative of where I want to go with this kitchen renewal. There is usable counter space!

Stay tuned!  We still have a lot of work to do: moving wall cabinets, getting a utility cabinet, painting walls and repainting cabinets and who knows what else.  The appliances come tomorrow!!  It is so exciting!!  Thank you so much  for being here!

It looks like you had to remove the trim around the door frame too.

The baseboard trim is gone but the door frame never had trim.
