Under sink cabinet repair

Please tell me I’m not the only one who has an under the kitchen sink area that’s disgusting.  The previous owners had a leak they never fixed.  The wood was rotten and while we pulled the rotted wood out long ago, We need an under sink cabinet repair job and we need it now.

Have you ever looked under your sink?  It’s pretty grody.  You’ve been spared the grossest photo since I pulled the wood up a long time ago. With all the cabinet painting and turning around of cabinet doors, now seemed like the right time for that under sink cabinet repair job.  I started by painting the walls of the cabinet.

Under the sink – before

Obviously, this cabinet needs a new bottom.  Above, you’re looking at the sub floor NOT the bottom of the cabinet.  The sub floor can’t take much more.  It’s time to cover it up.

I measured the size of the cabinet and cut a piece of plywood to fit.  I plotted out where the water pipes needed to be.  Using a spade bit, I drilled holes big enough for the pipes to come through

It seemed to me, the best way to accommodate the holes and still cover as much of the cabinet floor as possible was the cut the plywood into four pieces, fitting them into the cabinet like a puzzle

Unfortunately, that meant the middle portion of the cabinet sagged and I needed a solution.  While I’m sure I could have built some joists to hold it all up, I chose the simpler solution:  Using wood I already had, I took a 4×4 that had been hanging out in the garage and cut multiple pieces to support the middle.  Anchor them with glue or screws.

I finished off by painting the new cabinet bottom and my under sink cabinet repair is complete.  Also important to note:  it no longer produces a cringe when I look under there.
