Budget adjustments I love
Part Two
Ever watch HGTV when the hosts run into a challenge that costs more money in one place so they make adjustments in other areas to keep the budget close to what it “should” be. Well, I’m living that right now. In Part One, I was carefree & thinking I’d have a quick freshen up to the bathroom but the discovery of a sub floor issue meant we were going all in now—not later. So, budget adjustments needed to be made and I found some that won’t be heart breaking. In truth, adjustments aren’t uncommon in remodeling a 70s ranch. This old girl loves to throw me curve balls. In truth, this will still be thousands less than an average remodel but it will also be a couple thousand more than we planned on. Let’s take a look at some substitutions I made to help lighten the budget.
Just a reminder, this was the original mood board: a new medicine chest, sink, floating vanity, faucet, toilet & floor.
As much as I ADORE that Kohler sink, it was the first thing that had to go. Kohler is worth EVERY penny but my pennies needed to be pinched. That was the starting point for my design and budget adjustments. Here’s what I came up with.
Time to adjust
I thought adjusting would be painful. Truth is, I’m really happy with the adjustments.
First, I found this Vessel Sink from Amazon for only $87. It still had the black & white vibes I was craving but saved me a whopping $528 (which goes a long way toward a new shower). It also saved me a little space which I’m not mad about.
Next up, we evaluated our need for a medicine cabinet. We decided it wasn’t worth an extra $200 for a cabinet vs. storing our things in the closet directly behind the sink (and I may have a plan for a less expensive alternative down the road.) So, the Studio McGee Mirror at Target for $90 offered us a really good sized mirror and an opportunity to put a round shape into a very square room. Design Win!
Would you believe I found a nearly identical Faucet from Menards at half the price? That was a real win! And the Toilet from Lowes at $209 saved a few bucks too. It pays to shop around.
The floor tile adjustment seen in the mood board isn’t for the budget, it’s because I didn’t like the white matte floor tile with a white glossy subway tile (our choice for the shower). The matte black penny tile looks great with the subway tile and keeps in tune with the black and white vibe I love. When I went back and looked at my Pinterest boards, so many had a black floor that we decided to be bold and go for it!
Overall, these budget adjustments saved me $881 and thankfully, they didn’t skimp on the style. I actually love them and am excited to see them in the finished room.
Next up… more bathroom adventures.
