My dream house

Do you have a dream house?  Is  there a house you drive by or on the internet that you’re just in love with?  You know I have one.

I stumbled across this beauty on Pinterest.

Atherton Farmhouse

Have you ever seen such beauty?

Atherton Farmhouse

Everything about her is perfect. I love the board and batten siding, the blue roof, the door, the black trim… Everything is just lovely!! I literally sigh when I look at her.

And this is my house…

Our Bright Road

I love her so much but she’s in dire need of a face lift. Cue Ohio weather. Look closely and you’ll see a tarp on the roof (upper left corner). Some strong winds blew through and took a good chunk of shingles and now she needs a new roof.

For most people, it’s not a big deal. You pick a new roof and get a new roof. Not us… Things never seem to be that simple for us. You can blame some of that on my crazy, creative brain but a lot of the challenges lie in having a nearly 50 year old house. Getting a new roof is going to force us to address the exterior of our house. I wasn’t ready for that but here we go.

The trim on our house has been damaged by weather and woodpeckers. It needs either painted or replaced. The front sidewalk and patio are no longer level. We were going to have to remove & replace that this summer regardless. The siding on the porch needs some freshening. Some windows need paint. Still, other windows need replaced. The soffits under the gutters are faded and in need of paint, as well. So, it looks like my summer is going to be an outdoorsy one. I bet I’ll have a rockin’ farmer’s tan in no time.

Knowing we need all things replaced or freshened up has led us to discuss what we really want our house to look like. After all, if we’re going to address it, we should try to make it what we want, right?

More often than not, Andy and I do not agree on style. I threw out some mid century designs. We worried they were too dark. I threw out some traditional ideas and well, we aren’t very traditional and neither is our house. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you we’ve been debating this for two months. Cue the dream house…

I showed Andy my favorite house on Pinterest and he actually liked it too!! Is it really possible for us to take our little ranch and give her a modern farmhouse twist? (And yes, our house has wings.)

What if…

What if… We paint the brick white… We paint the window trim black and replace the windows that are rotted… We get a new front door… We cut down the trees that are wreaking havoc on the walkway, patio and roof… And the biggie, get a metal roof?

Of course, this is the dream. Our budget is a harsh reality and it’s a reality that will likely determine what we do but I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please leave a comment below.

You do what you can do with what you got, when you got it ?

Budget notwithstanding, that looks pretty amazing! I’m not a fan of painted brick, but if you want the clean lines, that what you need to do. I would suggest painting the porch area light to mid grey… just will give it a little more depth, I think.

Also… how did you generate that image of your house w/the new colors/roof??? Please share! We also need to refresh the outside and Mike has a hard time imagining what it might look like w/different colors.

Thanks for the input. I used photoshop to create the new image.
