Turning cabinet doors around

Cabinet doors

When I last addressed my kitchen with you HERE, I had a list.  I was checking things off my list, focusing on the cabinets and I had made MDF doors (more on those later).  I was contemplating trying to make my own shaker doors.  After a lot of contemplation, I decided that was probably more woodworking than I was ready (brave enough) to do which left me debating my options:  build doors out of MDF and hope they hold up or come up with another option.  I was clueless what other options I had.  Thankfully for me, I stumbled onto an idea on Pinterest.  This blogger turned her cabinet doors around to get the look she wanted.   I saw that post and felt like a light bulb went off above my head.  Turning my cabinet doors around could be a great solution!

Here on Bright Road things are never as simple as we’d like them to be.  The inside of my cabinet doors are flat so I thought I could work with that but the front… The front of the doors was a different story.  Look at all that moulding—all the moulding with ALL that depth.  No way I could turn that door cabinet around.  I doubted the doors would even close.

Could I?

Then I wondered…  Could I remove the moulding?  The above cabinet ended up being an extra when we shuffled cabinets around.  Seemed like a sign that I should use it as a guinea pig. I sat there with that screwdriver wedged in for quite a while before I had the nerve to swing the hammer and pry that trim off.

It came off!

After I took it off, I hammered that nail out and got to work on the remaining trim pieces.  It was flat!  Next, I took a trim piece and added it on the back side to give it the shaker look I love.

I grew more & more hopeful it would work.  More putty in the seams.  More sanding.  Paint.  And looky here!

It actually looks like what I want!!  I am OVER the moon happy about that.  It’s so pretty!!  In fact, it’s so pretty, it almost makes that wonky drawer that doesn’t close, the peeling paint and the yellow counters look better.  Okay.  It’s not THAT pretty but I promise you—it’s a big start to a MUCH more attractive kitchen where that wonky drawer gets fixed, the peeling paint is gone and God willing, a NON-YELLOW counter resides.

And as it turns out, turning cabinet doors around is going to be a fantastic solution for me AND this guinea pig cabinet door actually had a purpose.  More on that in my next post.  See you soon.
