What to do with blank walls

Time to put something on these walls

Now that the board and batten is up and looking oh so pretty, I’m sitting here wondering what to do with blank walls. Do I put up family photos, art, a mirror or some semblance of all three? And let’s add to this challenge, a pandemic with stay at home orders that have put a temporary “Closed” sign on my day job means Mama needs a budget friendly solution.

I started by shopping my own house.

As a photographer, I have an unusually large collection of picture frames that will likely come in handy for this project. I’m hoping that with my vast collection, I have exactly what I want or need. Here are the options I’m considering.

Botanicals

Botanicals are a hot decor trend and as luck would have it, I bought a book of botanical drawings a while back. I removed the pages with the intent of framing them somewhere in my house.

I like the colors and the content. With a mat and frame, they’d really pop on those beautiful walls. The black border is almost exactly the size of an 8×10 so custom framing isn’t necessary. I’d probably hang 3 or 4 in a row. The drawback: I worry a bit about having the right color mat & frame to make these pop on those beautiful walls. I’d want a warm toned wood.

What about something unique?

I could create a unique piece of art out of wood scraps I have in the garage. After making my kitchen table, I have been dying to do more work like that. Part of me wants to just stain it and keep it in those warm tones but another part of me wants to play with the idea of mixing paint and stain to see what I can come up with. Drawback: It might not turn out so pretty and that would be embarrassing.

I have this piece of art painted by my great uncle Charlie.

That painting is so special to me. I think the colors would really pop on those dark walls. Drawback: It’s in my office and I love seeing it while I work
